The Transvulcania ultramarathon essentially follows the GR131 trail from Fuencaliente at the southern tip of La Palma, along the Ruta de Los Volcanoes ridge, and around the rim of the Caldera, dropping steeply to Tazacorte on the western coast, to climb up to the finish line in Los Llanos a few km later.

The section of trail known as the Ruta de Los Volcanoes traverses a spectacular high ridgeline, crossing numerous cones of volcanic rock and debris; on race day we will be travelling from south to north, and we will drop off the ridge down to the Rufuge of El Pilar where an aid station will be situated. From here, at around km 27, the monstrous climb continues up te high point on the island at Roque de los Muchachos.

And so we ventured out to recce some if the Ruta de Los Volcanoes section around El Pilar, and the trails did not disappoint. Without doubt, some of the finest trails I have ever run!
