With over 2000 entrants in the ultra, and over 40 guys who had the potential to podium on any given ultra day, this year's race is reckoned by many to be the most stacked ultra field ever assembled. To mention only a few of the top names: Emily Forsberg, Anna Frost, Emma Rocas, Uxue Fraile, Krissy Moehl, Jodee Adams Moore, Maude Gobert on the women's side; in the men's race: Kilian Jornet, Luis Alberto Hernando, Timmy Olson, Dakota Jones, Sage Canaday, Luke Nelson, David Laney, Xavier Thevenard, Tofol Castanyer, Fabian Neuschwander, Ty Draney, Jason Schlarb, Ryan Ghelfie, Robbie Britton, Tom Owens, Vajin Armstrong, Philip Reiter, Javier Dominguez, Josh Arthur. Unbelievable the talent on show here; and it's fair to say that there are a whole host of unknown fast euros with a good chance for a high finish!
Pre race goals for me:
Position? I really have no idea how I will fare given the vast field, and the huge number of unknown runners. In local races, I typically have a good idea how I'll stack up against the competition! Top 100 seems achievable, for some unknown reason!
Run strong to the finish. In past ultra races, especially hilly ones, I've often been unable to run any of the later hills. I hope to still be running the climbs at the end.
Nutrition; I really don't feel that I've nailed race day nutrition, and I have bonked on a number of occasions, due to slacking off on the calories. I will make a conscious effort to keep well fuelled.
Wish me luck tomorrow!
